Creating a Safe, Supportive Environment for LGBTQ Students - Michelle Livsey: How often have you heard students remark, “that’s so gay!” or, “don’t be queer”? Have you ever suspected that students are the victims of targeted remarks or behaviors connected to their gender or sexual orientation? Many teachers are unsure or uncomfortable responding to these scenarios because they don’t know the best approach, and often feel they will make the situation worse for the victim. Students who don’t feel safe are at risk for absenteeism, academic failure, and emotional health issues. The good news is that there are small changes teachers can make in their classroom with very little impact on teaching time that allow all students to feel accepted and ready to learn. This presentation addresses the legal obligations, the newly published guidelines from RIDE, and research based practices that improve the climate for all students. As teachers, it is our responsibility to ensure that all students attend a school that is safe and respectful.
